Movies that Matter gelooft in de kracht van de camera als wapen. Een wapen tegen onverschilligheid. Want film heeft een ongekend vermogen: het opent ogen.

Als spin-off van het jaarlijkse festival tourt Movies that Matter door zeventien steden in heel Nederland.

In december presenteert Movies that Matter on Tour in het Filmhuis Den Haag de film The Miseducation of Cameron Post met na afloop een nagesprek georganiseerd door Amnesty International Den Haag. Dit keer met ‘onze’ Neo de Bono

Wanneer Cameron Post (Chloë Grace Moretz) tijdens een schoolfeest betrapt wordt als ze zoent met een meisje, sturen haar pleegouders haar naar een instituut om haar van haar homoseksuele gevoelens af te helpen. Sprankelende boekverfilming speelt zich af in de jaren negentig. Op het kamp wonen allerlei jongens en meisjes die volgens hun ouders niet aan de normen voldoen. Middels psychotherapie, discipline en andere twijfelachtige methoden moeten de kinderen leren inzien waarom ze op dezelfde sekse vallen en hoe ervan af te komen. Met de hulp van God, veel bidden en het onderdrukken van verlangens en gevoelens moet het lukken. Althans, zo vindt de leiding. Voor de tieners is het allemaal vooral verwarrend: sommige proberen zich koste wat het kost aan de regels te houden, andere keren zich juist tegen de bizarre ideologie. Voor Cameron blijkt het instituut een uitstekende plek om andere ‘outcasts’ te ontmoeten. Mooie coming-of-age-film over vriendschap, identiteit en het recht om jezelf te mogen zijn.

Na afloop is Neo de Bono te gast. Als ‘moderne monnik’ is hij betrokken bij Geloven in Moerwijk, een pionierende huis+tuin+keuken=kerk in een wijk waar van alles gebeurt. We kennen hem ook als aanjager van Pakhuis de Règâh, een onafhankelijk platform van en voor de stad Den Haag en haar inwoners waar o.a. de Tegenlicht Meetups plaats vinden.

When Cameron Post (Chloë Grace Moretz) is caught kissing a girl at a school dance, her foster parents send her to an institution to eradicate her homosexual feelings. A scintillating screen adaptation of a book set in the 1990s in the USA. The camp houses all sorts of boys and girls whose parents have decided they aren’t normal. Psychotherapy, discipline and various other dubious methods are used to make the children understand why they are attracted to the same gender and how they should get rid of that attraction. They should be able to manage with God’s help, lots of prayer, and by suppressing desires and emotions… At least, according to camp management. For the teenagers, all of it is mostly confusing: some try to follow the rules no matter what it costs, while others reject the bizarre ideology. For Cameron, the institution turns out to be an excellent place to meet other ‘outcasts’. A beautiful coming-of-age film about friendship, identity and the right to be yourself.

Afterwards Neo de Bono will be our guest. As a ‘modern monk’ he is involved with Geloven in Moerwijk, a pioneering house + garden + kitchen = church in a neighborhood where a lot of things happens. We also know him as the booster of Pakhuis de Règâh, an independent platform from and for the city of The Hague and its residents where, among other things, the Backlight Meetups take place.
