Although I’m a big supporter of the FairPhone concept (I am the owner of a FP1 and a FP2 and soon a FP3)

It all starts with a few questions you have to ask yourself and what price you are willing to pay for a fairer world..

Would you rather have a phone with four cameras and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, or a phone with an easily replaceable screen and battery?

What’s more important to you, a phone with a 108-megapixel experimental camera sensor, or one made with conflict-free materials, better labor standards, and readily available parts?

Their share is small, and mostly Euro-centric, but make no mistake: repairable smartphones like the Fairphone 3, available for pre-order now in Europe, are gathering steam and getting attention. Smartphones lack for truly exciting new features right now, and they are selling less because of it. Phones like the Fairphone 3 offer something truly new: longevity.

The Fairphone 3 is assembled out of easily removed modules, a case, and a battery, and all of these parts are available for sale, directly from Fairphone. Its screen and battery modules can be replaced by nearly anyone with the time and inclination (we’ll have a teardown, guides, and likely parts for this device, as soon as possible). The phone is made from what the company claims are fair materials, and 80% of them are recycled. The phones are assembled by workers paid bonuses based on social goals, not units shipped.

The specs are pretty comparable to a Google Pixel 3a XL and other mid-tier phones, and it ships with Android 9 pre-installed, with a 10 upgrade likely to follow soon after. The phone has both a microSD slot for storage expansion, and a headphone jack. Fairphone encourages and enables recycling, and doesn’t ship cables, chargers, and headphones you already have six of. But it does ship with the only screwdriver you’ll need to fix it, in the box.

They’re just trying to break our U.S.-based hearts, it seems. While the phone will work readily in most European countries, and likely many spots around the world, the Fairphone won’t work with 4G/LTE bands in the U.S.Comparing the network bands on the Fairphone 3 page with PhoneArena’s handy cheat sheet, it looks like T-Mobile would be the best network for consistent 3G, with AT&T a close runner-up (as is the case with most international phones). But 3G support is falling off fast among carriers, even T-Mobile. Unless they’re planning an overseas move, U.S. admirers of the Fairphone 3 are better off waiting for a U.S. release (if it ever comes).

Teracube
For U.S. folks looking for something similar, the Teracube is worth watching. It’s not released yet, and it’s going to launch with a Kickstarter, so a serious caveat emptor applies here, as with any crowdfunded, in-development product. But we’re intrigued to see the Teracube launching with an uncommon feature: a four-year warranty, one that includes a battery replacement midway through, parts, labor, and shipping included.

Presuming that a four-year warranty also means four years of security and software updates, that’s a modest but notable promise to buyers. We don’t have much more in details, but the pre-launch promo page makes clear that Teracube’s aim is to make people hold onto their phones longer than is typical.

Shift
Fairphone isn’t the only smartphone maker focused on repairability. German manufacturer Shift makes phones that are modular, repairable, made with a mind toward ethical and sustainable materials, and with repair guides available from Shift itself. Buying a phone from Shift includes a deposit, which you get back when you return the phone for either recycling or upgrade. Here’s one additional bit iFixit fans might find appealing: disassembling or rooting your Shift phone explicitly does not void the company’s warranty. You can read more about Shift’s founders and philosophy in an English-language profile in DW (which also features Fairphone’s founder).

Regrettably, the Shift, like the Fairphone, is a device suited to European cellular networks. We couldn’t find evidence on the web of people reliably using a Shiftphone on a U.S. carrier. But it’s heartening to see Shift, Fairphone, and Teracube openly appealing to customers with modern thinking: buy better, not more often.

The Fairphone series is pretty much the only major choice if you’re looking for an ethically produced smartphone. 2017’s Fairphone 2 even delivered a modular design to make it easier to repair, allowing you to extend the life of the phone.

Now, the social enterprise is back with the Fairphone 3 — so what’s changed in the two years since the last phone’s release?

The Fairphone 3 sticks to the same modular design and ethical production ethos as the previous model. In the case of the former, the phone is made up of six modular parts which can be swapped out to facilitate repairs. The team is taking things a step further too, saying it will sell modular earphones as an accessory that you can repair.

 

 

 

 

Fairphone adds that the new smartphone uses “responsibly sourced and conflict-free tin and tungsten, recycled copper and plastics, and sources fair trade gold.” It’s also confirmed plans to set up an initiative to better source cobalt.

The Fairphone team says it’s also better supporting recycling initiatives with the new phone, supporting collection programs in countries like Ghana, for one. Additionally, it will reward buyers for using the official recycling program to trade in their old phones (€20 for any phone and €40 for a Fairphone or Fairphone 2).

The team behind the new phone says it’s also working with final assembly partner Arima to pay bonuses to workers “with the aim to bridge the gap between minimum and living wages in the factory.”

What about the Fairphone 3 as a phone?
If there’s one bad thing about the Fairphone series, it’s that the device family is pretty middle-of-the-road when it comes to horsepower. This still seems to be the case on paper, as it’s offering a lower mid-range Snapdragon 632 processor 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of expandable storage.

The RAM and storage is very solid for a mid-range phone (or even a flagship phone in 2017), but the Snapdragon 632’s GPU is derived from the older Snapdragon 625 chipset. Nevertheless, the octa-core CPU (four Cortex-A73 and four Cortex-A53) should deliver nippy everyday performance in theory.

The new phone also sports a 5.7-inch FHD+ screen (18:9, Gorilla Glass 5), 12MP rear camera with dual-pixel autofocus (no dual camera setup here), an 8MP selfie camera, and a 3,000mAh removable battery with unspecified fast charging. Other notable specs include dual nano-SIM slots, 3.5mm port, Android Pie, NFC, and an included bumper case.

Fairphone is een Nederlandse telefoonfabrikant die zich inzet voor het produceren van duurzame en eerlijke telefoons. In augustus 2019 komen zij alweer met de derde generatie, namelijk de Fairphone 3, een smartphone dat zich, net als zijn voorgangers, onderscheidt op het gebied van duurzaamheid.

Doordat het toestel modulair is, zijn veel losse onderdelen vervangbaar, wat weer bijdraagt aan de duurzaamheid van de Fairphone. Het toestel wordt geleverd met een prima camera, een accu die dankzij Quick Charge snel op te laden is en een scherm van 5.65 inch. Daarnaast wordt het geleverd met Android 9.0 Pie, zodat je direct met je toestel aan de gang kunt.

Over Fairphone
Het Nederlandse bedrijf Fairphone is in 2010 opgericht en wil een smartphone produceren die zo eerlijk mogelijk geproduceerd is. Zo wordt er gekeken waar de grondstoffen voor de toestellen vandaan komen: zijn ze duurzaam, uit welke landen zijn ze gehaald en hoe zijn de condities voor de personen die de grondstoffen moeten verwerken?

Fairphone focust zich voornamelijk op milieu en duurzaamheid en dat blijkt uit de toestellen die ze geleverd hebben. In 2013 verscheen de eerste Fairphone en twee jaar later brachten ze de tweede aan het licht. Nu is de Fairphone 3 aan de beurt in de kleur Dark Translucent, waar de focus van Fairphone weer duidelijk naar voren komt.

Focus op de duurzaamheid
Dat Fairphone zich weer focust op het milieu, blijkt onder andere uit de materialen die gebruikt zijn. De helft van het gebruikte plastic is gerecycled en alle materialen zijn uit conflictvrije gebieden gehaald. Het toestel is bovendien TCO-gecertificeerd, een label voor duurzame IT-producten.

Modulariteit
De duurzame smartphone is modulair, wat betekent dat het uit verschillende losse onderdelen bestaat die uit elkaar te halen zijn. Deze modules zijn makkelijk te vervangen, zodat je niet direct een nieuw toestel hoeft te kopen wanneer één van de onderdelen niet meer volstaat. Dit heeft weer te maken met de gedachte van het bedrijf, dat je hierdoor veel langer met je toestel kunt doen en deze dus veel minder snel wegdoet.

Dit geldt bijvoorbeeld voor je scherm, je camera of je accu. De achterkant van het toestel is een beetje doorzichtig, waardoor je de verschillende modules kunt zien zitten. Dit weerspiegelt weer met de transparante gedachtegang van Fairphone zelf!

Camera aan voor- en achterzijde
Aan de voorzijde bevindt zich een 8-megapixelcamera, waarmee je leuke selfies kunt maken of mee kunt videobellen. Aan de achterzijde vind je een camera met een resolutie van 12 megapixels waarmee je prima foto’s schiet. Bovendien kun je hiermee 4K-videos opnemen.

64GB opslag met uitbreidingsmogelijkheid
Bang dat je toestel te snel vol komt te zitten, hoef je met de Fairphone 3 niet te zijn. De smartphone wordt namelijk geleverd met 64GB geheugen, zodat je genoeg ruimte hebt voor al je foto’s en filmpjes. Mocht dat niet het geval zijn, dan is er ook nog ruimte voor een geheugenkaartje.

Mogelijkheid voor dual sim
Als je op twee nummers tegelijk bereikbaar wilt zijn, kun je ook kiezen voor deze Fairphone. Er is namelijk ruimte voor een tweede simkaart, naast de geheugenkaart. Dit is erg handig voor als je werk en privé gescheiden wilt houden!

Quickcharge en vervangbare accu
Ook de accu van het toestel is vervangbaar. Deze heeft een capaciteit van 3060 mAh, waarmee je het bij normaal gebruik prima een dag volhoudt zonder oplader. Is hij wel leeg, dan is je Fairphone dankzij Quick Charge-technologie weer in een mum van tijd opgeladen!

Android 9.0
De Fairphone 3 wordt geleverd met de gebruiksvriendelijke software van Google, Android 9.0 Pie. Hierdoor kun je gebruik maken van de Google-diensten zoals Gmail, Google Drive en Google Maps. Bovendien kun je je telefoon inrichten zoals je zelf wilt, bijvoorbeeld door leuke apps en games te downloaden uit de Google Play Store
